In this world’s first commercial FDCA plant, Avantium will produce FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), the main building block for the 100% plant-based and circular polymer PEF (polyethylene furanoate). Avantium has worked for more than 18 years on the development of PEF, first in its laboratories in Amsterdam and since 2011 in its pilot plant in Geleen. The Company has optimized its FDCA/PEF technology and extensively tested the applicability of FDCA and PEF with partners worldwide. PEF bottles and packaging have been produced, as well as PEF fibers for clothing, interior, and industrial applications.

The challenge
To address potential risks and hazards associated with the project during the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, Process Risk Consulting were commissioned to facilitate the Project Risk Assessment, Hazard Identification (HAZID), Environmental Identification (ENVID), Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS), Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) Allocation Workshops , in line with ENI Guidelines for the Protos pipeline and associated facilities.
The scope of workshop included all of the onshore transport and storage facilities including several onshore pipelines and Above Ground Installations (AGI’s).
